Twenty RHS cheerleaders piled in the Club vans at 4 o’clock to attend the L.A. Marathon Cheer Competition held at Beverly Hills High School. When asked why so early, the girls responded in unison, “Because we want to be ready and do our best.”
The competition was open to all teams within the Los Angeles area and preceded the L.A. Marathon’s Cheer Alley course entertainment event. At Mile 18, all the cheer teams gathered along the route to motivate the Elite Runners as they headed down the home stretch toward Santa Monica pier.
RHS emerged victorious against teams from as far as Banning, some with their own marching bands, props and special outfits meant to impress the judges. It was a huge event and our team witnessed their self-esteem grow tremendously.
Coach Lorraine is proud of the girls for their dedication and commitment throughout the entire school year: “The girls have worked very hard…[with] studies and cheering.” The girls are already looking forward to next year to continue their growth and success in the classroom and on the field.
As part of the Club’s program, the team dedicates their time and energy to fulfilling their academic requirements through tutoring and educational enrichment activities. “Cheer teaches discipline and commitment,” said Br. Tom, “and we see how these young ladies have really taken their team seriously.”
This victory for the girls proves that good things do take place at 4 a.m.; we just need to provide the right things for the young people.
