At the Salesian Family Youth Center, we celebrate Christmas in a unique way. It’s not about material gifts, but about giving ourselves to others. This season, we’ve witnessed countless moments of selflessness and compassion that remind us of the true spirit of Christmas. In this e-news, I’ll share three key experiences from my life that highlight these lessons.

1. Visit to a Youth Shelter in Colombia

Children support team in Chia

I was invited to Colombia to consult with the city government about their efforts to support at-risk youth. During my visit, I had the opportunity to spend three hours with 70 young people living in a youth shelter—either removed from unsafe home environments or dealing with behavioral challenges. We discussed their goals, identity, and dreams. Toward the end of our conversation, I asked them what they would like me to pray for. Many of them requested prayer to be reunited with their families so they could spend Christmas at home. It was heart-wrenching to witness how, while many of us seek material gifts during the holiday season, these young people longed simply to be with their families.

Reflection: Let’s be grateful for the gift of family this Christmas. The love and support of family are often taken for granted, yet for many, it is the most precious gift of all.

2. Giving Tuesday Gift

At the SFYC, we strive to improve our services for the young people we serve. For Giving Tuesday, we launched a campaign to raise funds to purchase new sofas for our youth center. Despite the effort, we raised only $114. However, a guardian angel stepped in, contributing to the purchase of the sofas we desperately needed. This individual, who prefers to remain anonymous, has supported us in countless ways before. Thanks to their generosity, we now have a comfortable seating area for our young people.

Reflection: When we need something, God provides through the kindness of people with generous hearts. We may not always see the path clearly, but there are always those with big hearts ready to help.

3. Visit to a Homeless Shelter

This past Saturday, we visited Hope the Mission, a local shelter, where we served over 70 children. Alongside 30 of our young people, we organized games, activities, and reflections, creating a space of care and support. The most meaningful gift we brought was not material, but our love and care—showing up and offering something to the homeless community.

Reflection: We are enough to make a difference. Our presence, our care, and our willingness to serve are powerful gifts that bring hope and light to those in need.

These moments remind us of the profound impact we can have when we give of ourselves. Let’s continue to cherish the true spirit of Christmas—love, generosity, and care for one another.
